Jacob Pike is an 83′ x 18′6″ sardine carrier designed by Roy Wallace and built by Newbert & Wallace, Thomaston, Maine, in 1949. For most of her long life, the Jacob Pike carried herring from weirs and seines to sardine factories for processing and canning. Of Maine’s major fisheries, herring was once the largest by far, and in the boom times of the late 1800s canning factories literally built Down East towns like Eastport and Lubec where, before, there had been only wilderness.

Juliet is a 45′ x 9′ steam launch designed by N.G. Herreshoff and built by Herreshoff Mfg. Co., Bristol, Rhode Island in 1881. Lean and slippery, Juliet slipped along easily driven by a patented coil boiler, a compound steam engine, and a 28″ diameter propeller, all designed and built by Herreshoff. Steam launches and yachts invariably carried awnings as shelter from the sun and rain, but more importantly, to keep the coal dust from landing on the passengers.

Maud is a 20′ x 4′6″ steam launch for the steam yacht Siesta. She was designed by N.G. Herreshoff and built by Herreshoff Mfg. Co., Bristol, Rhode Island in 1882. Running in near silence, her passengers sheltered from wind and spray by the mellontop canopy, Maud shuttled back and forth between the shore, other yachts, and her mother ship Siesta, which anchored while cruising finding suitable docks scarce. Rather than being towed, Maud was hoisted on davits while Siesta was underway.
